What is myofascial release?
Your fascial system is made up of connective tissue comprised of collagen and elastin fibers. It is what gives our body support and structure. Fascia looks like a three diminensional web that runs throughout the body head to toe. Fascia works to protect our bodies during injury and at times overprotects our bodies causing compression on sensitive structures causing pain and eventually reducing ease of movement. Myofascial release techniques work to gently stretch the fascia to open restricted areas to relieve pain and discomfort, improve mobility, and vitality.
Must I be completely undressed?
Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed;and properly draped under sheets and blankets. However, with myofascial release most of the treatment work is done on top of the blankets and sheets. It is recommended that clients dress in shorts, and tee shirts (with women wearing sports bras).
Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?
The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, or change. You will then relax on the table.
Will I be covered during the session?
If needed, you may ask for a blanket during the session to keep you warm and comfortable.
What parts of my body will be treated?
A typical session includes areas where you note discomfort, and also other areas that the practioner notes to need treatment. Myofascial release is a total body therapy that treats subjective symptoms as well as identifying and treating primary restrictions.
What will myofascial feel like? Myofascial release for the most part is relaxing and soothing with variable sensations such as pressure relief, spasm and pain relief. However, at times temporary discomfort can occur. Sometimes body soreness is present the next day. (This will be reviewed with you in further detail at your initial appointment).
